Abstract

Why is starting harder than continuing? Why do short bursts rarely bring lasting change? Why does giving up halfway slide us back? This book uses the equations of classical and statistical mechanics to think about these questions, always keeping the conclusions of physics itself apart from their use on people as cross-disciplinary analogies or simplified models. The chapters examine in turn: the evidence on status quo bias and defaults, with a damped restoring model (only a sustained force moves the resting point) and a switching-cost model; Coulomb static and kinetic friction, stick-slip motion, contact aging and wheel traction — showing, after checking, that moving forward needs grip, not resistance, and that the Coulomb model has no "moderate" optimum of friction; the overdamped Langevin equation and Kramers' escape rate in a double well, where simulation shows that lowering the barrier speeds both leaving and relapse, while a steady outside pull shortens leaving and lengthens relapse but fails as soon as it is removed; the saddle-node bifurcation, hysteresis and critical slowing down of the cusp model; the evidence on learning by teaching (effect sizes g of about 0.35–0.56) and network models of complex contagion, with a proof that "tutor two classmates until they pass before unlocking" must jam a closed class, that only a version counted by tutoring sessions is workable, and that a closed class cannot spread exponentially; and the near-disappearance of ego depletion in large pre-registered replications, with explanations based on motivational reallocation and opportunity cost.

The eight chapters are read beside the Book of Changes ("Heaven moves vigorously"), Wang Yangming's Instructions for Practical Living ("a person must be polished in affairs") and the Blue Cliff Record case of "the one who has died the great death coming back to life", with the limits of each analogy, and end with a four-step barrier audit (start-up friction, barrier height, outside ratchet, feedback delay) and a pre-registered randomised controlled trial comparing solo study with a rule requiring two peer-tutoring sessions to unlock each stage (30-day completion and a blind-marked test score as co-primary outcomes, 469 per arm, with the decision rule written as code). Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (15 programs, all run and checked), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. This book is not psychotherapy or medical advice and makes no diagnostic or therapeutic claim.

Keywords: status quo bias; default effect; static friction; kinetic friction; stick-slip; traction; double-well potential; Kramers escape rate; Langevin equation; hysteresis; saddle-node bifurcation; learning by teaching; protégé effect; complex contagion; ego depletion; habit formation
