Abstract

Two planned hours cut into a dozen pieces by messages; bonuses and targets that drain the pleasure from something one used to enjoy; a task of exactly the right difficulty that makes time disappear. This book uses research on attention and motivation to examine the mechanisms and evidence behind these three everyday experiences. It covers Posner and Petersen's three networks of alerting, orienting and executive control (their links to the noradrenergic, cholinergic and dopaminergic systems are principal modulators, not sole mechanisms) and the subtraction scores of the Attention Network Test (uniform slowing leaves the scores unchanged; in pooled data from 1,129 adults the split-half reliabilities of the alerting and orienting scores were only 0.38 and 0.55, and the networks are not independent); working-memory capacity revised from "7 ± 2" to about 4 chunks, the redefinition of "germane" load in cognitive load theory, and how expert schemas compress 26 letters into 4 slots; preparation effects and residual costs in task switching, attention residue, and interruptions of about 2.8 and 4.4 seconds that roughly doubled and tripled sequence errors at the next step, with the clarification that the "23 minutes" is only the average time before interrupted work was resumed (25 min 26 s for same-day resumptions) and that "a glance at a message wrecks 15 minutes" has no direct evidence; crowding out by extrinsic rewards, which holds for expected tangible rewards contingent on engagement, completion or performance and for interesting tasks (128 experiments, d about −0.28 to −0.40), not for unexpected rewards, while positive feedback raises intrinsic motivation, with a Bayesian signalling model of why "being paid to do it" can be read as "it isn't worth doing for its own sake"; the different predictions of additive and multiplicative models of the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness (the multiplicative form is the author's assumption); and the eight-channel model of flow, the limited evidence for the hypofrontality hypothesis, and a learner model whose difficulty is tuned to 84–85 % accuracy (an analogy only; outcome entropy peaks at 50 %, not at 85 %).

Chapter 7 reads Cheng Yi's "what is called reverence is called holding to one; what is called one is called not going off elsewhere", Zhu Xi's "only gather in body and mind, orderly and unified, not letting oneself go: that is reverence", the *Xunzi*'s "empty, unified and still" and the *Zhuangzi*'s "his will undivided, he was concentrated like a spirit" beside executive control, attention residue and flow, stating clearly that reverence was a discipline of moral cultivation, not a technique of attention training. Chapter 8 offers a four-step attention-and-motivation checklist and a pre-registered randomised crossover trial of the "brain drain" hypothesis (own phone face down and silenced on the desk versus locked in another room; single primary outcome the automated operation span absolute score, with the Sustained Attention to Response Task secondary; periods at least 7 days apart with parallel forms; 160 completers, 190 randomised; decision rule written as code), noting that replications and meta-analyses since the original study disagree. Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (16 programs, all checked), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. This book is not diagnosis or treatment advice for ADHD, anxiety, depression or any other condition, and deals with no medication or dose.
