Abstract

Why does a student sing a phrase easily while thinking about the song, then lose pitch, thin the tone or crack the high note the moment they think about their throat? This book draws on voice biomechanics, acoustics, control theory and the psychology of motor learning: the myoelastic–aerodynamic theory, and why Bernoulli suction alone cannot sustain vibration without the convergent–divergent asymmetry of the mucosal wave; Titze's phonation threshold pressure, Pth = k·B·c·ξ0/T, and how damping, cover stiffness and glottal width raise it (with the evidence on hydration and vocal fatigue); source–filter theory and tube formants, and how a narrow epilarynx inside a wide pharynx gathers the third to fifth formants near 3 kHz (Sundberg 1974 and its 1995 revision); the Lombard effect and the pitch-shift reflex, with a delayed negative-feedback model showing why too much correction makes pitch wobble; Wulf's external-focus research and the constrained-action hypothesis, the EMG and singing evidence, and the 2021 meta-analysis beside a bias-corrected reanalysis that finds the average effect close to zero; the Wing–Kristofferson decomposition of timing variance and phase correction; and jitter, shimmer and the harmonics-to-noise ratio computed from synthetic voices, with their limits.

The eight chapters are read beside the Record of Music, Shen Kuo's "no words within the sound" and the sayings of Chinese opera teachers, and end with a four-step acoustic assessment in Praat and a pre-registered randomised trial comparing an internal-focus instruction with a tactile anchor plus external auditory-spatial focus on beginners' pitch error in cents and HNR after five minutes (65 completers per group, with the decision rule written as code). Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (28, all checked), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. Voice health notice: this book is not medical advice; persistent hoarseness needs a doctor.

Keywords: voice science; phonation threshold pressure; mucosal wave; singer's formant; source-filter theory; pitch-shift reflex; auditory feedback; external focus of attention; sensorimotor synchronization; jitter; shimmer; harmonics-to-noise ratio
