Abstract
Information, help and new practices flow along the ties between people, but claims such as "the more people you know the better" or "find the key person and it will spread overnight" make things far too simple. This book uses graph-theoretic models, runnable programs and empirical research to ask how the structure of social networks shapes what a person can see, how far a behaviour can spread and why groups go wrong together. It covers Granovetter's "strength of weak ties" (whose job-finding figures come from a subsample of 54 people), neighbourhood overlap and the role of weak ties in holding networks together; the Watts–Strogatz model, in which 1–5 % of shortcuts cut path length to 18–11 % of the regular lattice's while clustering stays at 97–87 %; and the large-scale tests with Facebook and LinkedIn data (tie for tie, moderate strength helps most, while most help overall comes through the very many weak ties); Burt's network constraint, effective size and betweenness centrality by Brandes's algorithm, the evidence on the returns to brokerage (673 managers) and their reversal under high-commitment cultures in Chinese high-tech firms; simple and complex contagion, the width and placement of wide bridges (three ties placed together are more reliable than sixteen scattered ones), heterogeneous thresholds, and the 2024 result that with noisy thresholds long ties speed spreading up again; scale-free networks and preferential attachment, the statistical dispute over "scale-free networks are rare" (about 4 % of nearly a thousand networks show the strongest evidence) and the difficulty of testing power laws, and robustness under random failure and targeted attack (at finite sizes the advantage against random failure is small, the fragility under attack pronounced); eigenvector centrality, Bonacich's beta-centrality and the power iteration, damping factor and dangling nodes of PageRank; and the exact probabilities of Bikhchandani–Hirshleifer–Welch information cascades (with signal accuracy 0.7, wrong cascades about 25 % or 15 % of the time), and how sealed votes, stated reasons and public independent information break wrong cascades.
Chapter 7 reads this research beside the vertical and horizontal alliances of the *Stratagems of the Warring States* and the *Records of the Grand Historian* (showing, on the basis of the Mawangdui silk manuscript *Letters and Speeches of the Warring States Strategists* and the work of Tang Lan and Yang Kuan, that Su Qin came after Zhang Yi and that much of the *Records*' account of Su Qin is unreliable), the *Analects*' "three friends who benefit" and "sociable but not factional", and the "Discourses of Qi" on not letting the four kinds of people live mixed together; it notes that the line "assess the land and grade the levy" quoted by the author comes from the "Discourses of Qi" and that its analogy with network structure is strained, and it states the ethical boundary between Warring States statecraft and modern networks of mutually beneficial cooperation. Chapter 8 gives a four-step topology checklist and a pre-registered trial randomised by team, comparing "independent anonymous written judgments and reasons, shown to all before discussion" with "open statements in order of seniority" (single primary outcome: an index of the anchoring of the team's final estimate on the first two speakers' initial estimates; 50 analysable and 59 recruited teams per arm, 118 teams and 590 people in all; decision rule written as code). Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (15 programs, all checked), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. The book teaches no technique for manipulating other people's networks; the author's influencer- and digital-marketing business has a direct commercial interest in its subject, which is disclosed in the book.
