Abstract

"Cross a threshold, flip suddenly, and find it hard to go back" is said of lakes, coral reefs, the climate, power grids and even a company's cash flow. This book uses models from nonlinear dynamics, runnable programs and empirical research to examine such critical transitions: what they are mathematically, what traces a system leaves as it approaches a threshold, how reliable those traces are in finite data, and what kinds of structure make a system less prone to flip. It covers the two saddle-node bifurcations of a grazing (harvesting) model (c1 = 1.79 and c2 = 2.60 with illustrative parameters), the finding that once c2 is crossed the pressure must fall about 31 % below the collapse point for recovery, and reversible, hysteretic and irreversible lakes in a phosphorus model; the evidence for multiple stable states in lakes and the dispute over "alternative stable states" on coral reefs (about 4 % of 1,851 reefs dominated by macroalgae); the square-root law of critical slowing down and Wissel's extrapolation, the derivation and simulation check of AC(1) = exp(−λΔt) and Var = σ²/(2λ) in the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, and evidence from palaeoclimate, a whole-lake experiment and yeast; ROC evaluation of Kendall's τ indicators (AUC 0.98 for variance and 0.94 for autocorrelation with dense records, a τ cut-off of about 0.8 to hold false alarms to 5 %, close to a coin toss with only the last short stretch), noise-induced flips, flickering and the "prosecutor's fallacy", and a test on 126 long-term ecological data sets in which true positives were rare; how Pimm's engineering resilience and Holling's ecological resilience can rank systems in opposite orders, and how suppressing small fires or removing an ungrazeable reserve shrinks a basin of attraction in models (presented as conclusions under model conditions and generalisations from cases); Motter and Lai's capacity–load model (in a 300-node scale-free network scanning in steps of 0.1, about 140 % spare capacity is needed to withstand an attack on the highest-load node, a figure specific to that illustrative network) and the first-order collapse of interdependent networks (p_c = 2.4554/⟨k⟩, becoming continuous when dependence is weakened); and Perrow's normal accident theory, high-reliability theory and the price of modularity as a firebreak.

Chapter 7 reads this research beside "Treading on frost, the hard ice is coming" and its commentaries in the *Book of Changes*, the sayings of Confucius quoted in the "Great Commentary" ("danger comes to one who rests secure in his position", "to know the incipient is divine"), chapter 64 of the *Laozi* and the dyke and the story of Bian Que in the "Illustrations of Laozi" of the *Han Feizi* (noting that "a dyke a thousand *li* long" is a later popular form and that the Bian Que story is best read as a parable), and states that the ancients expressed political and moral foresight and experiential analogy, not differential equations or statistical tests. Chapter 8 gives a four-step resilience and early-warning checklist (with a fictional water system as example) and a pre-registered trial randomised by individual: in a simulated resource-management task with a hidden fold, it compares an added dashboard of rolling recovery time and variance with current stock and profit only (single primary outcome: the share of irreversible collapses; 203 analysable and 226 recruited per arm, 452 in all; decision rule written as code). Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (15 programs, all checked), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. The book is not medical advice and makes no investment or financial forecasts; its business and physiological examples are analogies. The author's interests are disclosed in the book.
