Acoustic Persuasion, Prosodic Information Theory and Interpersonal Physiological Synchrony: Pitch Contours, Pause Entropy and Listener Autonomic Coupling in Public Speaking and Leadership
DOI10.5281/zenodo.23753267

Abstract
The same words spoken in different voices can lead listeners to judge the speaker very differently. This book examines that difference with acoustics, information theory and cognitive neuroscience, and asks which popular claims about it have evidence. It covers the true source and scope of Mehrabian's "7 %–38 %–55 %" rule (it applies only when a single word conveys liking and the channels contradict each other) and empirical research on how fundamental frequency, formant dispersion, harmonics-to-noise ratio and speech rate affect listeners' judgements, including a single-word study in which the trustworthy prosodic prototype rose at the end of the word; Shannon surprisal and the uniform information density hypothesis, with a limited-capacity listener model (rushing leaves key information almost unencoded, a pause before and lengthening of the key word works best, and fillers act somewhat like pauses but may make the speaker seem less sure); final falls and rises generated and measured with the Fujisaki model, declination being partly planned and uptalk serving more functions than uncertainty; speaker–listener brain coupling and heart-rate synchrony among listeners, with the Kuramoto model and control conditions separating common drive from mutual coupling, and a circular-shift test of inter-subject correlation; computation of roughness from 30–150 Hz amplitude modulation in screams and of the harmonics-to-noise ratio; and the proximity effect of cardioid microphones, signal-to-noise ratio and critical distance.
The eight chapters are read beside the Record of Music's "all sound arises from the human heart" and its six sounds of the heart, the Guiguzi's probing and sounding out and "one's own silence is stillness", and the Analects' "the gentleman has three aspects" and "in speech, it is enough to convey the meaning", noting the limits of such a reading. They end with a four-step acoustic checklist for use before speaking or recording and a pre-registered double-blind randomised controlled trial comparing a "final falls + 0.6-second pauses before key words" version with a "final rises + no pauses + faster speech" version of the same pitch (primary outcome willingness to invest from a hypothetical budget, stratified by four voice actors, 338 analysable and 398 recruited per arm, decision rule written as code). Marked boxes separate published evidence, runnable Python calculations (14 programs, all checked; every sound in the book is synthesised), classical sources and the author's hypotheses. The book is about helping true content to be heard and remembered, not about manipulating listeners with vocal technique.
